What File Types Can Disk Drill Recover?

The list of file types we can recover is comprehensive — and, in some cases, unlimited. It depends on the type of recovery that is available for a particular volume. Here is a break down of the scanning methods and the types of file available:

Recovery with Quick Scan (Any file type/Limited situations)

This method can recover any file type, but it often isn’t comprehensive enough and a Deep Scan (see below) will be needed. It works best in the following situations:

  • Recently deleted files on volumes with FAT and NTFS file systems.
  • Very recently deleted files on volumes with HFS+ file systems.
  • Recovery of data from lost partitions on HFS+, FAT or NTFS volumes.

Recovery with Undelete Protected Data (Any file type/Limited situations)

This method can recover any file type, but it can only be used in the following situations:

  • HFS and HFS+ volumes where Guaranteed Recovery was activated prior to data loss and the lost file was deleted by sending it to the Trash.
  • HFS, HFS+, and FAT volumes where Recovery Vault was activated prior to data loss and was set to protect the particular partition where your lost data was stored.

Recovery with Deep Scan (Limited file types / Any situation)

Unlike the two previous methods, Deep Scan method can be used in any situation — on any volume with any file system. The only drawback is that while it can recognize over 175 file types, it cannot recognize all of them.  Below is a list of all file types recognized by Deep Scan, organized by type (Video, Audio, Image, Document and Archive) and then by file extension. If you’re not sure of the file extension for your application, type Command+F and search this page by application name or other keyword. If you don’t see the file format you need listed, please send us a request.

All of the listed file types can be checked or unchecked in Disk Drill’s Preferences (Disk Drill > Preferences > File Types). All types are checked and scanned for by default, with the exception of HTML and XML (due to the volume of results produced). You will need to go into Preferences and check the box next to HTML or XML if you wish to scan for one of these types.
